Women to Watch 2019

We love that we live on a generation on incredibly talented women. Women who inspire us, on screen and off.

And because of this, at top of our list is…

  1. Zendaya

Zendaya first reached our screens in 2010 when she starred in Disney’s Shake it Up, which led on to her signing up to the series K.C. Undercover. But even back then when she was signing up to these roles at the age of just 16 years old, Zendaya was keen to stand up to what she believed in.

In an interview with Vogue she recounted that ‘for her to sign on to K.C. Undercover, she decided Disney would need to meet demands. First, they would need to make her a producer. Next, she objected to the show’s title, which at the time was ‘Super Awesome Katy.’

Zendaya commented: “I was like, ‘The title is whack. That’s gonna change.” She rejected the character name Katy questioning “Do I look like a Katy?” and insisted that the show featured a family of colour, as well as making sure the character wasn’t just an all-singing, all dancing stereotype. She wanted to show that a girl can be more than this, so instead opted for the character to be a martial arts expert and super smart, but with the normality of someone who is socially awkward.

And it’s not just behind the screen that the stunning 5ft 10 businesswoman has an impact. She also inspires her young fans as she campaigns against unrealistic perceptions of beauty, encourages humanitarianism and conveys pride for her heritage.

She’s also been taking the fashion world by storm with Michael Kors describing her as: ‘Fashion Fearless’.

It’s hard to find fault with the actress. She has humour, grace and isn’t afraid to get stuck in. For her role as Anne Wheeler in The Greatest Showman, Zendaya insisted on doing all the trapeze work herself. And with all these accolades it is easy to forget she is just 22 years old.

Zendaya will be returning to our screens this year in with her edgier take on MJ in the upcoming Spiderman sequel ‘Far from Home’.

Another actor and activist to watch this year is:

  • Jameela Jamil

Jameela may be known as a model, actress and presenter, but for us she’s so much more and that’s why she has made it on our women to watch list for 2019.

We may know her best for her presenting days on T4, but nowadays she’s starring alongside Kristen Bell in the US hit comedy ‘The Good Place’. But despite her move to Hollywood, she remains grounded and still has a firm grip on her British wit.

And like Zendaya, Jamil has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind. Over the years the British beauty has been campaigning against body-shaming, and even calling out the likes of Kim K after she posted a promotion for appetite suppressing lollipops. Jamil quickly took to Twitter to respond: “Fuck off. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls.”

“EVERYONE has dimples on their thighs. I do, you do and the CLOWNS at @Avon_UK certainly do.”

Then earlier this year Jameela spoke out once again with the perfect response to Avon’s marketing campaign for a product that removes cellulite and stretch marks, which carried the slogan: “Dimples are cute on your face (not on your thighs).”

Jamil’s response: “EVERYONE has dimples on their thighs. I do, you do, and the CLOWNS at @Avon_UK certainly do. To make us fear them and try to ‘fix’ them, is to literally set us up for failure.”

Jamil has set up an Instagram account call ‘I weigh’ where women can post images of themselves and then comment on how much they weigh in terms of ‘qualities’ as opposed to physical weight. Jamil also refuses to and photos of her retouched.

We love her. And we hope to see more of her in 2019.
